Answer:

1. Click on the Gear Icon, then select Setup
2. Click on the Object Manager and find the object you'd like to create the ID on
3. Select Fields & Relationships, then click New
4. For the field type, select Text then click Next
5. Name your field in the Field Label box and set the Length to 20
6. Check the External ID checkbox
7. Click Next
8. Set the visibility, then select Next
9. Add the custom field to your page layout, then click Save
