Answer:

When new attribute values are supplied for existing attributes

Use the following options to determine what happens when importing attribute information.

For non-unique attributes

For attribute types that have not been defined as unique in RE, choose whether or not IOM should look to see if a matching attribute already exists on the record.

If IOM is set to look for a matching attribute, you can use the Ignore new values checkbox to tell IOM what to do if a match is found.

Always add new

When this option is selected, IOM does not look to see if any attributes already exist.  IOM simply adds new attributes based on the incoming data.

Category

When the Category option is selected, IOM will look for an existing attribute with the same category as the incoming data.

To select the Category checkbox, the Always add new checkbox must be cleared.
  • If a matching attribute is found and the Ignore new values checkbox is selected, the existing attribute stays as is.  A new attribute is not created.
  • If a matching attribute is found and the Ignore new values checkbox is cleared, the existing attribute is updated based on the incoming data.
  • If a matching attribute is not found, IOM adds a new attribute based on the incoming data.

Category + Description

When both the Category and Description options are selected, IOM will look for an existing attribute with the same category and same description as the incoming data.

To select the Description checkbox, the Always add new checkbox must be cleared.  Selecting the Description checkbox automatically selects the Category checkbox.

Category + Date

When both the Category and Date options are selected, IOM will look for an existing attribute with the same category and same date as the incoming data.

To select the Date checkbox, the Always add new checkbox must be cleared.  Selecting the Date checkbox automatically selects the Category checkbox.

Category + Comments

When both the Category and Comments options are selected, IOM will look for an existing attribute with the same category and same comments as the incoming data.

To select the Comments checkbox, the Always add new checkbox must be cleared.  Selecting the Comments checkbox automatically selects the Category checkbox.

Category + <Other attribute selections>

When both the Category and any other combination of other attribute options are selected, IOM will look for an existing attribute with the same category and other pieces of the attribute as the incoming data.

To select the other checkboxes, the Always add new checkbox must be cleared.  Selecting the other checkboxes automatically selects the Category checkbox.

For unique attributes

This option applies to attribute types designated as “Allow only 1 per record” in the Raiser’s Edge Attributes Configuration section.

IOM will always look for an existing attribute with the same category as the incoming data.  Use the dropdown to select the following:

Update existing
  • If a matching attribute is not found, IOM adds a new attribute based on the incoming data.
  • If a matching record is found, the existing attribute is updated based on the incoming data.

Ignore
  • If a matching attribute is not found, IOM adds a new attribute based on the incoming data.
  • If a matching record is found, the the existing attribute stays as is.  A new attribute is not created.
